The Ross is a much loved and deeply valued space in Edinburgh’s centre. But the infrastructure created in the 1930s isn’t designed for the 21st century. Access and facilities are increasingly inadequate for the wide range of people we hope to welcome to the Bandstand in the future, and in 2016 the City of Edinburgh Council began to examine ways to improve it for everyone.
In 2017, US-based architects wHY won the competition to redesign the Bandstand and its surroundings in West Princes Street Gardens. Their design, already being affectionately referred to as ‘The Hobbit House’, sits at the heart of a green design scape that enhances the already-impressive Castle and the natural beauty of the land.
